Photography, Virtual Reality and intimacy: Getting closer in Japan’s post Fukushima world.
An exploration of immersive storytelling, documentary photography as seen through the lens of the immersive exhibition After The Fallout. We will take a deep dive into the production of the project and what it means to tell the story across multiple mediums.
Sam Wolson is the Interactives Visual Features Editoris at The New Yorker and a Peabody and Emmy winning director, photographer, and journalist with partners including National Geographic, and The New York Times. His projects have premiered at festivals across the globe, including at Sundance, Venice and SXSW. In 2021 he premiered his new VR documentary film Reeducated, in partnership with The New Yorker, the Pulitzer Center, Eyebeam and ONA. The multi-part immersive project is the most ambitious immersive interactive feature that The New Yorker created to date. Reeducated went on to win prizes at SXSW, New Images, VRHAM, the Online Journalism Awards and won an Emmy. In 2019 and 2020 he was awarded a Knight Foundation grant for his immersive documentary film projects. In 2017, he co-directed the VR film "We Who Remain", which was the first character-driven VR film shot in an active war zone -- in the Nuba mountains of Sudan. It premiered at SXSW, won best VR film at SIFF and was a co-production between Emblematic Group, The New York Times, AJ+, and ARTE. He also worked since 2011 as a documentary photographer across the globe.
Dominic Nahr is an internationally acclaimed photographer known for his captivating and evocative images. He is the recipient of the World Press Photo Award, Pictures of the Year Awards, Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award, Swiss Press Photo Award, and was honored as the Swiss Photographer of the Year in 2015. In 2018, he was appointed as a Brand Ambassador for Leica Cameras, a testament to his technical expertise and artistic vision. He served as a contract photographer for Time Magazine from 2011 to 2015 and was represented by Magnum Photos from 2010 to 2014. Dominic's compelling imagery has graced the pages of National Geographic Magazine, The New Yorker, GEO, Der Spiegel, Stern, and many other esteemed publications. Dominic Nahr's photography has been exhibited internationally, showcasing his talent and unique perspective. His solo shows have been featured at renowned venues like Les Rencontres d'Arles, Visa pour l'image in Perpignan (twice), NRW-Forum Kultur und Wirtschaft in Düsseldorf, and Ryerson Image Centre in Toronto. His work is held in the permanent collections of prestigious institutions such as the National Gallery of Art, Fotostiftung Schweiz, Magnum Photos, Ryerson Image Centre, The Ransom Centre, The Wedge Collection, Getty Images, and various Private Collections. Currently residing in Zürich, Switzerland, Dominic Nahr continues to push the boundaries of visual storytelling and multimedia. He serves as a staff photographer and editor at the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, capturing compelling moments and conveying powerful narratives.
