A Brain Translated into Digital Sculptural Form

The brain is the centre of our consciousness and responsible for our feelings and behaviour. It enables us to breathe, think and talk. Without it, life as we know it would not be possible. This project focuses on the macroscopic anatomy of the arteries and their relationship to the structures of the brain. The digital 3D model of the brain created for this purpose shows a complex aneurysm (bulging in the arteries) in the so-called Sylvian fissure (lateral sulcus), an area in the temporal region of the brain. By means of the 3D model, images can be generated which visualise the anatomy of the brain and help to plan possible steps in a surgical procedure. Thus, the model facilitates a better understanding of complex brain structures and also serves as a surgical planning tool for future neurosurgeons.
